The week school closes and work does not

Fall break is not a vacation unless your job closed too. For a lot of houses this October, school is out for a week and the office is not.
Knox County Schools already ran October 5-9, 2026, and the after-school program tied to that calendar stopped with it. Pulaski County takes October 12-16. Other districts land somewhere in that same stretch. The dates were printed months ago. The scramble usually starts the Sunday before.

Put the closed days on paper
Open the district calendar and write the actual dates. Not "sometime in October." The real Monday through Friday, or whatever your district printed.
If you have kids in two schools, you may have two different weeks. Write both.
Then check the care you already use. After-school programs often follow the school calendar and shut down with it. The Tuesday plan you pay for all year can be closed on the exact days you need it.
If a day is blank, it is not covered. "We'll figure it out" is how Thursday morning becomes a parked car and a laptop.
Price one option, not five
You do not need every camp in the county. You need one number you can say out loud.
A few posted prices from this fall, so you are not guessing from a comment thread:
- Elizabeth, Colorado: a city day camp, ages 5-12, October 12-16, $55 a day.
- Memphis: a fall-break camp at $195 for five days, or $285 for three midweek days, with a refund cutoff already past.
- Metro Atlanta: one camp operator put day programs around $60-$125 a day this autumn, so a five-day week lands near $250-$450. The same write-up put an in-home sitter for that week closer to $800-$925.
Those are examples, not your invoice. Your town will not match them. Call the place you would actually use.
Ask two more things before you pay. Can you book single days, or only the whole week? What time does pickup end, and what is the late fee? A camp that ends at 4:30 does not cover a shift that ends at 5. The late fee is a second billSchool fees that hit after class starts you can see before you are the last car in the lot.
If they only sell the full week, that is the number. Do not invent a discount they did not offer.
Split the week on purpose
A full week of camp is one choice. It is not the only honest one.
Three lanes. Pick before you scroll.
- Days a program covers. Book those. Write the pickup time where you will see it.
- Days a person you trust covers. The other parent, a grandparent, a trade with one family. Name the human.
- Days someone takes off work. One or two days you can actually take is a plan. Five days of working from the couch with a kid in the room is a plan only if the job allows it and the kid is safe. For a lot of jobs it is neither.
If Wednesday stays blank, solve Wednesday. A blank day does not get nicer by waiting.
If the fun week does not fit
Camps sell the zoo, the corn maze, the slime day. That is fine if the number fits. It is not the price of being a decent dad.
A covered, ordinary day you can afford beats a memory week that shows up next to daycare. If you already pay for care, this week is often extra, not instead. Same job as fixing the car vs paying for daycare: name which bill is the real one, then let the other one wait.
If the quote is ugly, say no before you are in the parking lot.
Short. Kind. Done. If you need the longer version, it is the same shape as explaining we can't go.
The work conversation
Say the dates while you still have a choice. A morning-of text is how you lose the day and the tone.
You are not asking permission to have a child. You are naming the hours you will miss. If the job punishes that, the job is the problem. It is still better on a calendar than whispered from a parked car.
The point
Broke does not mean broken. Fall break is a week the school printed and the office did not. Write the dates. Price one option. Split what is left with a person, not a vibe. The kids need to be safe and fed. They do not need a vacation you cannot pay for.
Quick answers
How much does fall break childcare cost?
It depends on your town. A city day camp in Elizabeth, Colorado posted $55 a day for October 12-16, 2026. A Memphis camp posted $195 for five days. One Atlanta operator put day programs around $60-$125 a day. Get one quote from a place you would actually use.
What if the after-school program closes with the school?
That is common. Care tied to the school calendar often shuts down for fall break, including the program you already pay for on a normal Tuesday. Ask this week, not Sunday night.
Do I have to book a camp for every closed day?
No. Book the days a program can cover, name a person for the rest, and take off work only for the days that are still blank. A full week of camp is one option, not a requirement.
