Winter heat number card
Find last winter's heat number, make one call, and agree on a figure with your partner before the first cold week.
One rounded number beats a spreadsheet. Fill the top box this week, make the call before the tank or the bill is the boss, and tape it near the thermostat.
Full write-up: the heat bill before it gets cold. Fill on your phone, print this page, or save as a PDF. No email required.
Type on your phone first, or open the filled sample to see how another dad ran it. Print keeps what you typed.
Last winter's number
Round it. "$1,800 last year" is a plan. A 10 p.m. reconstruction project is not.
Oil heat: the early October 2026 NEADA forecast is about half again over last winter. A forecast, not your invoice. Heat included in rent? You are done. Skip the stress-bought space heater.
The one call
Make it before the tank is low. Write down what they said, not how nice they were.
Rooms that stay warm
If the number does not fit, the next sentence is which rooms, not who is bad with money.
If the number does not fit
Say it while everyone is warm
To the company
“Can we set a budget plan, or a smaller fill, before the tank is empty?”
To your partner
“Last winter was about this much. I want one number we can live with before we order.”
To your kid
“We stay warm where we sleep and where we sit. We are choosing rooms, not choosing you.”
