The block does not need a second lap. Halloween 2026 is Saturday, October 31. A lot of the walking already happened in a school parking lot earlier in the week. Saturday is the houses on your street, and several city notices this month already say when that ends.

Sandwich, Illinois set official trick-or-treat hours for that Saturday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The notice went out October 8. Middleton, Wisconsin set 5 to 8 p.m. the same night. Different start. Same finish. If your town did not post a window, borrow 8. You do not need a council vote to decide when your kid is done.

Name the far house before you leave

Pick the turnaround before the shoes go on. The blue house at the end of the block. The corner with the stop sign. One loop, one side if the street is long, then back the way you came. A sticky note is enough if the week has been loud. The note is the plan. The sidewalk is not a meeting where you renegotiate.

The other neighborhood is how 8 becomes 9:30. Someone will say their street does it bigger. You can like those people and still turn around. Your kid already did a loop. A fuller bucket is not a better memory if the last four blocks are a carry.

The costume was already decided. School, the parking-lot event, and Saturday night can share one outfit. That plan is in one Halloween costume, not three events. Saturday does not get a new character because a friend showed up in a different one.

The class party was a different afternoon too. If you already took one slot on that sheet, this night does not owe the room a second performance. See the class party signup is one job.

Little kids do not owe the window

Eight is the end, not a goal. If your kid is four and done after six houses, you go home. Children's Mercy wrote on October 20, 2026 that the American Academy of Pediatrics wants kids 12 and under with an adult, and that going before dark is a fair plan. A short loop in the light still counts.

A lot of schools already held the long version. Holland Public Schools posted a free district trunk-or-treat for Sunday, October 25, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. If you went, Saturday is not a makeup exam. If you skipped it, Saturday is still one loop, not two events stacked so nobody feels left out.

Porch lights on. Stay on the sidewalk. No darting between cars. That is the safety talk, and it fits in one sentence on the driveway. You do not need a lecture that turns Halloween into a shift.

Older kids get a clock, not a speech

Children's Mercy also told parents of older kids to review a route and agree on a time to be back, with a phone. That is the whole script.

You are not asking for a pin drop at every house. You are asking for the turnaround you already named. If they want a friend's street, that street is the loop, not a bonus after yours. One route. Home by 8.

If they push, you do not owe a talk about statistics. You can say no in one line. The longer version of a kind no lives in explaining we can't go. Halloween night is the short version.

The extra hour is not a second street

Clocks fall back Sunday, November 1, 2026, at 2 a.m. Someone in the group will do the math out loud: we can stay out, because we get an hour back. The hour shows up in the middle of the night. It does not add a street at 8:40. Sunday still has a wake time, and Monday still has work. Hold that line the way the extra hour is not extra sleep already says.

The point

Broke does not mean broken. One loop, home by 8, bucket on the table. The porch bowl is a different job, one bag, and it is already named in the porch bowl is one bag. You can turn your own light off when the bag is gone, or when you get back. The kids who walked with you still had a night.

Quick answers

What time should trick-or-treat end?

Use your town's posted window if it has one. Sandwich, Illinois set Saturday, October 31, 2026, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Middleton, Wisconsin set 5 to 8 p.m. If your city did not post hours, 8 p.m. is still a clean end.

Should little kids stay out until 8 on Halloween?

Not if they are done. Children's Mercy wrote on October 20, 2026 that the American Academy of Pediatrics wants kids 12 and under with an adult, and that going before dark is a fair plan. One short loop still counts.

What if the other families keep walking?

You can leave. Tell them you are heading back. The second neighborhood is optional. Your kid had a loop. That is the night.
