The extra hour is not extra sleep

Sunday, November 1, 2026, the clocks fall back. At 2 a.m. local time they return to 1 a.m. Someone at work will call it a free hour. Your kid did not get the memo.
If bedtime is 8, Sunday night will feel like 7 in their body. If their body wakes at 6, Monday's clock will say 5. You still have work. The extra hour was never sitting in a jar for you.

Do not start a sleep project
The week before the change, every parenting tab has a plan. Shift bedtime 10-15 minutes later, a little at a time, so the night of the change feels normal. Children's National posted that option on October 15, 2026. The same note said the other option out loud: some families just adjust the day the clocks change. There is no single right way.
The day-of version fits a week you already filled. A slow shift is fine if your house likes projects. It is seven extra negotiations if it does not. Either way, Monday needs one wake time. Two systems in one kitchen is how 6 a.m. becomes a fight about who is the soft one.
If nights are already a standoff, this Sunday is not the rebuild. That work lives in the kid who won't sleep. If 5 a.m. is already a regular in your house, the quiet-morning rules in how to handle the early riser still apply. Fall back just makes both of those louder for a few days.
Sunday morning is the plan
Change the clocks Saturday night after they are down, or Sunday when you notice the microwave is wrong. Phones mostly handle themselves. The kid will not.
If they are still asleep at Monday's wake time, get them up then. Do not donate the morning to "they earned the extra hour." A Sunday sleep-in is how Monday starts in the dark, before coffee, before the car.
If they are up early, let them be up. The house does not have to open early with them. Breakfast stays at the Monday time. Use your real time. If breakfast is 6:30, it is still 6:30.
Open a curtain. Turn on the kitchen light when the day actually starts. Morning light does more than a speech about Congress and time zones.
Hawaii and most of Arizona do not change clocks. If that is you, skip the Sunday rule. Dark afternoons are still on the way. That is a pickup and a coat, not a bedtime project.
Bedtime will feel early
Sunday night they will not be tired at the usual time. Put them down anyway. Same steps you already use. Pajamas, book, lights. A new routine is another thing to fail at on a Sunday.
If they bounce back out, walk them back once. Same line. The second trip does not get a speech about how everybody is tired.
They may wake early for a few mornings because their body is still on the old hour. Cranky through Thursday is a normal hangover from a clock. It is not a grade on the week you just survived.
What you tell the house
Your partner does not need a briefing packet. They need the same wake time.
If they want the slow 10-15 minute shift, they can run it. Agree on the Monday wake time before Saturday night. The free hour is a story people tell on Friday. On Sunday it belongs to whichever kid hits the hallway first. You did not waste it. It was never parked in your name.
Bedtime is already the scarce thing in the house. Guard it the way you would guard the last quiet half hour, the same way a side hustle that steals bedtime is a bad trade. A clock change does not get to spend it either.
The point
Broke does not mean broken. Set the microwave. Wake them at the Monday time if they are still out. Feed them at the Monday time if they are not. Say the short line. Let the week be a little off. You do not owe anybody a seven-night performance.
Quick answers
When do the clocks fall back in 2026?
Sunday, November 1, 2026. At 2 a.m. local time, clocks return to 1 a.m. in most of the U.S. Hawaii and most of Arizona do not change.
Should I move bedtime 15 minutes a night before the clocks change?
You can. You do not have to. Children's National said on October 15, 2026 that some families shift 10-15 minutes every few days, and some just adjust the day the clocks change. Pick one, and keep Monday's wake time.
Why is my kid up early after daylight saving ends?
Their body is still on the old hour. A 6 a.m. body wake becomes 5 a.m. on the new clock. It usually settles within a few days if wake time stays put.
