The candy aisle is built for a cart. A bowl on the porch is one bag.
Candy and chewing gum cost 7.7% more in September 2026 than a year earlier, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That CPI came out October 14. Food at home was up 1.8% over the same year, so the candy shelf is the part that feels rude. The National Retail Federation still expects about $4.1 billion in Halloween candy spending, and 61% of people who celebrate plan to hand treats out. You can do that. You do not have to walk five stores to prove it.

Two honest bags, from Walmart listings in late October 2026. Your store will differ by a dollar. The shape will not.
Quiet block or a short walk-up: the M&M's, Snickers, Skittles, and Twix variety bag, 60 count, 24.01 ounces, listed at $9.94. About 41 cents an ounce. One piece per kid covers about 60 kids, then the light goes off.
A street that actually fills up: the M&M's, Snickers, Twix, and Milky Way chocolate mix, 200 count, listed at $24.87. About 32 cents an ounce. Better unit price. It is still one bag, not a starter bag.
The small Hershey, Kit Kat, and Reese's mix was listed at $5.54 for 20 pieces. That is the right bag if a handful of kids from the building might knock. It is the wrong bag if your loop stays busy for an hour. You will be back in the aisle on October 31, in the Saturday crush.
Stay in one store
A CBS Los Angeles price check on October 14, 2026 put Costco's all-chocolate mix near 27 cents an ounce: $23.99 for more than 5.5 pounds. Walmart's all-chocolate mix in that same check was about 32 cents an ounce, which matches the 200-count bag above. Costco wins the unit price if you are already in that line. It is not a reason to add a membership, a drive, and then a "backup" bag at the grocery store.
NRF found that if Halloween prices feel high, 31% of shoppers plan to comparison shop. The useful version of that is the cents-per-ounce line under the bag in front of you. The 200-count mix beat the $9.94 bag on unit price and lost on the total. Decide which problem you walked in with: the receipt, or running out. Then buy that bag and leave.
Your kid's favorite is the bag, or it is a no
They will lobby for the pumpkin Reese's. Fine. That can be the one bag. Walmart listed Reese's snack-size peanut butter pumpkins, 16.2 ounces, at $7.97, about 49 cents an ounce. A short street can live on that. A variety pack plus the pumpkins is two bags.
The costume was a different receipt. If you already picked one outfit for school, trunk-or-treat, and the 31st, this aisle does not get to reopen it. That plan is in one Halloween costume, not three events.
The class party was a different receipt too. Juice boxes for the room are not the porch bowl. If you already took one slot, this week does not get a second themed errand. See the class party signup is one job.
If the answer is a $25 pile of singles next to a $10 mix, the answer is still one of them. You can name which one. You do not owe a speech about cocoa prices.
The small asks stack the same way as the $25-$40 stuff that shows up all fall. One extra bag feels tiny until it sits next to the costume and the class party.
When the bag gets thin
Halloween 2026 lands on Saturday, October 31. Buy the bag on a weeknight, not in the Saturday crush. Hand out one piece. When the bag is low, or the block goes quiet, turn the porch light off. Leftovers become the movie bowl and the occasional lunch treat. They are not a reason to top off on Sunday.
A quiet street is not an insult. A lot of kids already did a trunk-or-treat earlier in the week. You still bought the bag you named. The rest can sit, same as every other year.
The point
Broke does not mean broken. One number, one bag, porch light. The kids who knock still get a piece. Your grocery week still exists. The $47 grocery weekOne week of groceries on a hard budget does not have to absorb a second candy run.
Quick answers
How much should I spend on Halloween candy to hand out?
About $10 for a quiet block, or about $25 if kids actually walk your street. In late October 2026, Walmart listed a 60-count variety bag at $9.94 and a 200-count chocolate mix at $24.87. Buy one of those, not both.
Is the bigger Halloween candy bag a better deal?
Often on cents per ounce. That 200-count mix was about 32 cents an ounce, and the 60-count bag was about 41 cents. The bigger bag is only the better buy if you will hand it out.
What if we run out of candy on Halloween?
Turn the porch light off. One piece per kid until the bag is gone is a plan. A second store run on October 31 is how a $10 bowl becomes $30.
