One pack, two dinners

The $47 grocery week got rebuilt with real Walmart prices. Seven dinners for four came to $44.04, because nothing in the cart gets bought for one night.

The Sunday Note

The $47 grocery weekOne week of groceries on a hard budget had a problem. The list was cheap, but it pretended to cover every meal for four people, and no honest list does that for $47. So I took it to Walmart prices and rebuilt it around one rule: nothing in the cart gets bought for one night.

One bag of chicken thighs is Monday's baked chicken and Tuesday's quesadillas. One pound of ground beef is Wednesday's spaghetti and Thursday's taco bowls. Eggs are Friday's breakfast for dinner and Sunday's fried rice. Seven dinners for a family of four came to $44.04. Breakfast and lunch run about $28 more, and the guide says so instead of hiding it.

The move that makes it work is boring: cook the whole pack the first night. Eat half. Put the other half in a container before anyone goes back for seconds. Leftovers you planned are dinner. Leftovers you did not plan are trash on Friday.

This week, before you shop, write the pairs on the fridge. Chicken: Mon, Tue. Beef: Wed, Thu. If an item cannot name its second night, it stays on the shelf.

See you next Sunday.
