Little kids: "We buy food and our home first. Then fun. Some days are food-and-home days." That is enough.
School age: "We have a plan for money. The plan says yes to the library and the park. It says not this month to the $40 plastic thing." Invite one choice: "Do you want the movie night or the special cereal? Not both this week."
Teens: Share a simple picture: rent, food, gas, leftover. Not the password to the bank app. Not the credit-card balance as a guilt trip. A picture. Then: "This is why I work. This is why we wait. You are not the problem."
What not to say
- "We can't afford it because of you."
- "Don't tell your mom/dad."
- "When I was your age I had nothing, so be grateful."
- Detailed adult debt talk that they cannot act on.

A ritual that works
A weekly five-minute "money weather." Green: we are okay. Yellow: we are careful. Red: needs-only week. No speeches. Kids can live with weather. They cannot live with a storm that never gets named.
